Big Rumper is a Sasquatch Drinks cask-aged rum collaboration with Old Log Cabin, a Seattle Based distillery. If you're a baseball fan and/or a Seattle local you've probably noticed that the name is a nod to Mariner's catcher, and 2025 Home Run Derby champ, Cal Raleigh AKA "Big Dumper".
This rum was distilled from Panela sugar, an unrefined, pure whole cane sugar popular in Latin America known for its rich caramel flavor and retention of natural molasses, then aged 7 years in Old Log Cabin ex-bourbon barrels. The final yield was 170 bottles, with 125 allocated to group members. Much like Cal, this bottle is quite the slugger at big league 130 proof.
Because it's not a molasses distillate it doesn't have that typical rum nose. After aging it definitely smells much more like bourbon than rum. That said, there are nice notes of vanilla, cinnamon, butterscotch, apple cider, and something vaguely floral. A bit of water opens it up and reveals some hints of tropical fruits, citrus zest and marzipan.
The palate is very spice-heavy, with notes of orange pith, burnt caramel, and dried fruits. A little water tames the burn and brings out the fruits a bit, along with some menthol.
It's a scorcher neat, both on the nose and the tongue. The ethanol will bite you and fatigue the palate quick if you're not careful. This best serves as a bold mixer.
